From Sketch to Silk: The British Garden Scarf
Inspired by British wildlife, this Emily Carter London scarf captures the intimacy of creatures found in meadows, woods and gardens - from the flight of the tortoiseshell and common blue butterflies to the the door mouse and banded snail. With intricate illustrations of the robins, dragonflies, ladybirds and more, this design celebrates the vibrant life that thrives in the British countryside, which was endless inspiration for Emily as a child growing up. Some of these drawings were also included in Emily's collaboration with Kew Gardens, which she illustrated the Christmas calendar for in 2023.
Dragonflies are featured in this design, and are incredible fliers, capable of hovering, gliding, and even flying backward with precision. Their huge compound eyes give them nearly 360-degree vision, making them expert hunters, able to catch prey mid-air with a success rate of over 90%. They're also seen as symbols of good luck and transformation in many cultures.
The Garden Tiger Moth is one of Emily's favourites, and is just as fascinating its caterpillar, known as the "woolly bear," is covered in bristly hairs and can survive harsh winters by freezing and thawing. Despite its chunky appearance, it moves quickly across the ground and later transforms into a moth with striking, patterned wings used to startle predators.
All elements in this design were hand drawn by Emily with pen & paper.
