Bespoke: Altuzarra x Old Navy
Emily Carter has partnered with Joseph Altuzarra and Old Navy on their new collection, featuring Alexa Chung. The collaboration brought Emily’s hand-drawn botanical and nature-inspired artwork to life across the collection, with large-scale painted florals, insects and other elements from the natural world forming the backdrop to the designs.
The project began with an extensive body of original artwork created especially for the collection. More than 50 individual paintings and drawings were created by Emily, each carefully developed by hand before being digitally composed into the final designs. Working from her original pen-and-paper drawings and painted studies, Emily built intricate compositions of botanicals, insects and natural forms, balancing the richness of the artwork with the scale and movement required for the garments.
Among the insects featured are ramshorn snails and 8 spot ladybirds, along with poppies, astrantia, thistles and angelica. Every insect and botanical element began as an original drawing or painting by Emily, retaining the character and detail of her hand throughout the final artwork. The resulting designs were translated into the backdrop of Joseph's new womenswear collection for Altuzarra & Old Navy, bringing Emily’s distinctive approach to natural history and hand-illustrated artwork to a much wider audience, with Alexa Chung as the face of the campaign.
